National Skin Cancer & Melanoma Awareness Month

May is National Skin Cancer & melanoma awareness month. Below is information that will hopefully raise awareness to you & give you tips on prevention & early detection.

Melanoma is a form of skin cancer that can be deadly if not detected early. It can start anywhere on the skin, even in the mouth or in the eyes. It can occur in pre-existing moles or in new skin lesions, so it is important to have regular skin exams and practice skin protection throughout life.

Do you know the risk factors for developing melanoma?

  • fair skin, freckles, light hair
  • 6 or more sunburns during childhood
  • family history of melanoma
  • tanning bed exposure
  • large moles at birth
  • numerous moles
  • weakened immune system


What can you do to prevent it or catch it early?

  • protect your skin on a daily basis with sunscreen of SPF 30 or greater & reapply every 2 hours
  • avoid sun during 10am-3pm
  • wear long sleeves & a hat when outside
  • wear lip balm w/ SPF 15 or greater
  • wear UV protective sunglasses
  • avoid tanning salons
  • pay attention to changes to your skin
  • examine your skin monthly
  • have your skin examined by a professional at least once a year
